Overture at the Serenade Studio

 

Join Michelle on a monthly musical journey into the world of classical music and experience the wonders of opera, the symphony, and the ballet.   

 

Talks will be held at the Serenade Studio, here at 6 Ivy Avenue.   These 90-minute talks are recommended for adults and young people over the age of 10.   

 

$40 per person per evening, or all four for $135.  Classes begin at 8:00 pm.

HANDEL AND HIS WATER MUSIC                                     Thursday, September 22   

Join us as we revisit that famed boating party along the Thames,  July 17, 1717, where musicians on a  barge first performed Handel's glorious Water Music for the delight of King George I.   Discover Handel's world, and learn about the intricacies of the period orchestra as you acquaint yourself with this perennial Baroque favourite.   

Performance:  Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra at Koerner Hall. 

ORCHESTRAL GEMS FROM 1920S EUROPE                       Thursday, November 3   

The inter-war period in Europe was a heady and fascinating time.  In this class, we will examine four exquisite and powerful works from three European countries: Vaughan Williams' beautifully evocative The Lark Ascending, Sibelius' 7th Symphony, Walton's Viola Concerto, and Ravel's justly-celebrated Boléro.  

Performance:  Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall.

THE BALLET AND TCHAIKOVSKY'S NUTCRACKER             Thursday, December 8  

For many, the holiday season would not be complete without The Nutcracker.  The charming story, the timeless and evocative music, and the artistry of the choreography are simply outstanding.  Join us as we leap gracefully into Tchaikovsky’s world, and discover what makes the Nutcracker ballet so irresistible to audiences of all ages.  

Performance:  National Ballet of Canada at the Four Seasons Centre.

THE OPERA AND MOZART'S MAGIC FLUTE                           Thursday, January 21    

Few things in life are grander than opera.  And when it comes to creating operas which are at once musically dazzling, visually captivating, whimsical and charming, yet deeply moving, Mozart is the master.  Join us as we delve into the awe-inspiring world of opera, and get to know the music, the characters, and the story behind Mozart's operatic masterpiece, completed and premiered just two months before his death at the age of 35.

Performance:  Canadian Opera Company at the Four Seasons Centre.
